BSNL has released a satellite phone enabling calls and SMS in areas lacking regular mobile network coverage. The phone is priced at Rs 1.34 lakh (Rs 1,34,166), Oneindia Telugu reported. It works without mobile tower signals, according to News18 Telugu. TV9 Telugu reported the phone has been made available to general users too, but noted that using it requires permission from the central Department of Telecommunications. It is said to be useful for defence, maritime forces, disaster situations, mine workers and remote-operation specialists. Velugu reported that the recharge plan will carry a charge of Rs 175 per minute, and said this cost may become a burden for ordinary users. BSNL has not yet issued an official statement on recharge plan pricing.
